Mel O'Drama is Where Acting Up Is Encouraged ~ Milton & Quincy

December 5, 2016
Mel O'Drama has a variety of acting classes for all ages and levels!

Mel O' Drama
(ages 4.5-8.5)

In this drama class, students bond through theatre games, scenes, commercials and movement. We always incorporate confidence and self-assurance whether through song or rap or even within scene work in class. We write a play in class which we rehearse weekly and perform right before session ends! I have several different days and times (see further below) depending on your child's age and ability so please contact me if this is the class for your budding actor!

Mel O' Moves (ages 4.5+)

In Mel O' Moves, we choose some of our favorite songs from the radio, from musicals and from my own playlist (!!) and we base our movements on the lyrics AND the emotions that the songs evoke in us as we listen. We sometimes choreograph mini scenes (i.e. fairytales) to different music genres  and we present our work at the end of session. This is a great class for the child who might express herself/himself better through movement rather than language. It's also a great class for those who LOVE dance but who might be tired of the conventional style dance class. Unlike most dance classes that teach specific steps, Mel O' Moves allows the child to flow whichever way he/she feels the body should.

Character Development (ages 8.5+)

In this class, children usually have several of my Mel O' Drama sessions under their belt before joining. We delve much further into drama in character development creating characters which eventually tie into a play that we present at the end of session. We incorporate theatre games into this class also which really creates a strong bond amongst the students.

Improv & Monologues (ages 8+)

This is a fast-paced, fun and FUNNY class! If you've ever seen the show 'who's line is it anyway?' and LOVED it, then this class is very much like the child-friendly version of that show! It's a WONDERFUL way to encourage kids to let go and create with little or no premeditation! We finish this session with a 'who's line is it anyway?' type show where we ask the audience for suggestions and when I tell you this is by far our FUNNIEST show at Mel O' Drama, I am NOT kidding! A GREAT class for the kid who just LOVES to be funny!! We also write and present our own monologues! Writing monologues is a process that takes several weeks before presenting our final copy. A wonderful class where the child feels a huge sense of accomplishment and achievement.

Mel O' D's

I have often been asked by parents if I, or someone I know, teaches voice lessons/coaching in the area. So now, I'm bringing it to YOUR doorstep. I have hired a wonderful girl who has studied musical theatre and vocal training and she'll be joining us this Fall to start MEL O' D's! This class will consist of voice training in a group format (she will also be available privately) where the students will learn the fundamentals of singing and they will be choosing some fabulous songs which they will present at the end of session.

What do we do in class? Each class varies depending on the dynamic of the group but generally we work on improvisation through theatre games that teach students to focus, listen, react, compromise and work together as a team. We discuss subject matters and I write material for the students to rehearse weekly from short plays to monologues, poetry to songs (or raps). At the end of each session, we invite friends and family in to see what we've been up to!

There has never been a more important time for our children to believe in themselves than now. In the face of peer pressure, bullying, and the general ups and downs of growing up it's vital we arm our children with the tools they need to deal with these situations. The tools I develop in Mel O' Drama are self-awareness, self-confidence and self-belief. I encourage the ability to not just function as one but as a team with our peers showing compassion, encouragement and praise for the work we're creating together. I'm a firm believe in positive reinforcement and drama is a wonderful ground upon which to build this belief.

A session of Mel O' Drama runs $250-$300 for a 10-week session depending on the class chosen. Gift certificate are available in any denomination. Call Today!! 617-276-2772 or email at: melodramakids@gmail.com!
