Fun activities to do this week around Dorchester

April vacation is upon us...Many events are still virtual but as things begin to safely reopen for in person activities I wanted to have a good mix of both for your family to choose from. Here is our 2021 April Vacation Guide, filled with some fun things to do this week!


Zoo New England:

Spring has officially sprung at Zoo New England, here are some fun activities happening at Stone Zoo and Franklin Park Zoo this month!

T. Rex Adventure is opening at Stone Zoo this Friday! Guests will come face-to-face with colossal creatures from the past to make discoveries and connections between animals from the past and present. Additionally, Zoo New England is offering a variety of fun events and activities for guests of all ages to enjoy during April break (both in-person and virtually).

πŸ¦– T. REX ADVENTURE via Zoo New England - (Stone Zoo, in person)

Taking place from April 16-September 6, guests can take a prehistoric journey through time and walk among the giants that once ruled the planet in Stone Zoo’s all-new T. Rex Adventure. T. Rex Adventure is included with general Zoo admission.

Virtual Animal Breakfasts - (April 17-25, Virtual)

Now through April 25 early risers can stay comfy in their pj's and enjoy breakfast while they ZOOm with WILD friends during Zoo New England’s Virtual Animal Breakfasts.

Breakfast hosts (along with expert sidekicks from Zoo New England’s Education team) include: Sloth, Hippo, Kangaroo, Reindeer, Yak, Fennec Fox, Camel, Red Panda

ZOOcation Week (April 19-23, Virtual)

πŸ’ “ZOOcation Week’ (April Vacation)

Taking place from April 19- 23, families can join Zoo New England for ZOOcation Week- a wild week of virtual animal encounters and educator-led crafts and activities, live from both Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo!

Boston Area City Nature Challenge (April 30 – May 9, Anywhere)

Join Zoo New England for the Boston Area City Nature Challenge!

Join Zoo New England for the annual City Nature Challenge, an international effort to find and document plants and wildlife in cities across the globe! Make your observations from April 30 - May 3, and identifications will take place May 4 - 9. More details to come.

  • The Fields Corner Branch offers themed book displays and themed book bundles for families for the duration of the StoryWalk.
  • The East Boston Branch has themed book bundles available for families for the duration of the StoryWalk.
  • The Egleston Square Branch will have make-and-take crafts available for families for the duration of the StoryWalk. The branch will also hold a Facebook Live Storytime on Tuesday, April 20, at 10:30 a.m.
BOOK: LET'S GO TO THE PARK
  • The Uphams Corner Branch will have make-and-take crafts available for families for the duration of the StoryWalk. The branch will have an Earth Day storytime on April 22 at 10:30 a.m. on Zoom. It will also hold a "What Can You Find in a Park" Storytime on May 10 at 10:30 a.m. on Zoom.
  • The South End Branch has themed book displays, book bundles, and make-and-take crafts available for families for the duration of the StoryWalk.
BOOK: AUGUSTUS AND HIS SMILE
  • The Hyde Park Branch will post a Facebook Live craft video on Friday, April 16, that participants can watch asynchronously for the duration of the StoryWalk installation.
  • The Mattapan Branch has make-and-take crafts available for families for the duration of the StoryWalk.
  • The Grove Hall Branch will have make-and-take crafts available for families for the duration of the StoryWalk.

April Drumming In The Yard!

APRIL VACATION WEEK | DORCHESTER, MA

During the week of April 20-24 (Tuesday - Saturday), Project Misik Drumming in the Yard will meet outdoors, in a Dorchester backyard, every day for two sessions, each for one hour, to drum & to connect.  Sign up for the time that works best for you: 

“Morning” meets from 11am-12pm (Tues-Sat), and 

“Afternoon” meets from 1pm-2pm (Tues-Sat).

Receive a Free Tree at Mary May Binney Wakefield Arboretum

This Earth Day 🌎, you can receive a free tree... and attend a virtual workshop to learn how to care for it! REI Co-op has partnered with the Friends of the Blue Hills, Wakefield Estate, and other Blue Hills Climate Action Coalition members to celebrate Earth Day with a free tree giveaway.

You can pick up a free tree beginning on Monday, April 19 through Friday, April 23, between 9:00 am and noon daily. Trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once you arrive, you'll choose from four species of trees available and three species of shrubs. Learn more.

After you've picked up a tree, you'll want to know how to care for it... so join REI, the Wakefield Arboretum and the Friends for a special virtual workshop about trees and how to care for them. Learn more and sign up.
