This important Life Saving Skill for Children

Swimming & Swim Safety

By Stephanie Crawford April 25, 2022

Did you know that approximately half of Americans don't know how to swim?  That means that half of us are in danger of drowning if we ever had an accident that involved deep water.  This is why it is important to bring awareness to water safety and the need to teach children to swim and be comfortable in water at a very young age.

I learned this great information from the owner of British Swim School: City of Boston.  I was on a virtual community meeting and Elsia came to present about her mission to teach water safety in as many Boston neighborhoods as she can.  I was so impressed by what I had learned that I enrolled my son into his first swimming class at British Swim School in a local gym pool.  They have various locations and are hoping to secure more in the Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan areas (I can't wait!).

Amani's first class was an adult and baby class where we sang songs as we got our children accustomed to the water, we had so much fun.  Amani loved going and learned to hold his breath, jump in the water and float on his back.  His favorite day was when he got to wear his outside clothes to class as he learned how to navigate the water.  That was mommy's favorite day too, I love how intentional they are about water safety.  Even during times of regression and crankiness, the instructors and even the owner were flexible, understanding and patient with him.  We are now in the Seahorse class and I already have dreams of cheering Amani on at the British Swim School Swim Team practices.  I'll keep you posted on his progress!

Have you been to a swimming class? What did you learn about water safety that you didn't know before?
